Sophia’s mother, Mary Jo owns Sophia’s gym, Athletic Edge, so Sophia got her start in gymnastics at a very young age because she spent so much time in the gym! Sophia began competing in 2011 as a level 3 with Athletic Edge and competed level 4 in 2012. As a level 5 in 2013, Sophia placed fifth on floor at the New York Downstate State Championships. Due to the USAG skill/level change, Sophia competed level 5 again in 2014 and finished third on beam at the New York State Championships.
Sophia’s optional career began in fall 2014 as a level 6 at the Spooktacular Invitational where she placed third on floor and fourth all around. Sophia continued to improve throughout the season and went on to place fourth all around at the New York State Championships. Sophia kicked off her level 7 season once again at the Spooktacular Invitational where she won the vault, beam, floor, and all around titles. Sophia had a great level 7 season and made it to the New York State Championships where she won the bars title, placed second all around, and placed third on beam. Sophia then moved on to the Region 6 Championships where she placed seventh all around.
As a level 8 during the 2016-2017, Sophia continued to improve her all around score at almost every meet. At the New York State Championships, Sophia took home the bars title and placed third on floor. Sophia then went to the Region 6 Championships where she finished second on floor and second all around.
Sophia moved up to level 9 for the 2018 season and really improved throughout the season. At the New York State Championships, Sophia won the vault and floor titles and qualified to the Region 6 Championships. At regionals, Sophia placed second on beam and floor, and fourth all around, qualifying to the Eastern Championships. Sophia had a great meet at Easterns and put up her best bars score of the season; she also finished sixth on floor.
Currently, Sophia trains 21 hours per week under coaches Lena Squarciafico, Robert Axelrod, Mary Casale, Tara Polizzi, and Mary Jo Greaves at Athletic Edge Sports Center. In the future, Sophia hopes to earn a college scholarship for gymnastics to a division 1 school.
