Sara Distefano began gymnastics at the age of two while her mom coaches cheerleading. It was originally going to be a way to keep Sara busy, but she ended up falling in love with the sport and there was no turning back. Sara started at Athletic Edge Sports Center, and has stayed there ever since. Sara began competing in 2010 as a level 4 and finished her season at the New York State Team Cup where she finished third on floor and sixth all around. During the spring of 2012, Sara competed level 5. In 2013, Sara competed level 6. As a level 6, Sara had a great season and went on tow in the New York State vault title with a 9.700 as well as placing third all around.
Sara’s optional career began in 2014 at the Spooktacular Invitational where she won the vault and beam titles and placed third all around. Sara continued to improve throughout the season and at the 2015 New York State Championships, she finished second on bars and in the all around. Sara also qualified to the Region 6 Championships where she placed second on vault. As a level 8 in the fall of 2015 and into the spring of 2016, Sara won the bars, floor, and all around titles at her first meet. Sara placed in the top 3 in the all around all season long. At state, Sara had a great meet winning the vault, bars, and all around titles. Sara moved on to regionals where she won the vault title as well as taking home the bronze medal in the all around.
Coming off of a great level 8 season, Sara entered her level 9 season with a win on floor and second all around. Sara’s all around score increased at almost every meet, and she finished second on vault at state as well as regionals. Sara competed her second year of level 9 during the 2017-2018 season and had a great year. Sara became the 2018 Region 6 vault champion and qualified to the Level 9 Eastern Championships where she finished fourth on vault and third on floor.
As a level 10 during the 2018-2019 season, Sara began her season at the Athletic Edge Local Meet where she won all four events and the all around. Three months later at the New York State Championships, Sara took sixth on vault and qualified to the Region 6 Championships. At regionals, Sara had a great meet, winning the vault title, taking third on bars, and finishing eighth all around as the first alternate for JO Nationals.
Currently, Sara trains 20+ hours per week under coaches Mary Casale, Tara Polizzi, Lena Squarciafico, and Rob Axelrod at Athletic Edge Sports Center. In her free time, Sara enjoys volunteering and is a loyal teammate to everyone. In the future, Sara hopes to earn a scholarship for gymnastics to a division 1 school.
