The highly anticipated matchup between the number one Oklahoma Sooners and fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs kicked off with a bang, with the Sooners becoming the first team since the new start values for vault were announced to have an entire lineup of 10.0 start value vaults. Led by a 9.950 from junior Jade Degouveia, the Sooners started off their meet with a huge 49.5 total on vault, giving them a immediate lead over Georgia. The Gymdogs began on bars with the first two gymnasts up both having a fall, but rebounded quite nicely to finish up the rotation strong. Sophomore Marissa Oakley was the highlight with a 9.900, and Georgia headed into the second rotation with a 48.25.

The uneven bars proved to be the Sooners’ best event of the night, with senior Brenna Dowell and junior superstar Maggie Nichols, both former World Champions, leading the way with scores of 9.950. All six gymnasts in Oklahoma’s lineup did a phenomenal job, leading to a 49.525 rotation total and an extension of their lead. Senior Sydney Snead stuck a beautiful Yurchenko one-and-a-half vault for Georgia to turn things around in rotation two, scoring a 9.950 to lead a very strong 49.3 rotation.

Rotation three was another solid one for the Sooners, this time with sophomore Anastasia Webb leading the pack with a 9.925 and again hitting six for six routines in their lineup. Georgia also hit six for six on floor, and junior Sabrina Vega scored a huge 9.900 for her exciting routine.

In the final rotation, the Sooners finished on floor with six exciting routines, closing out the win with two 9.925s from Nichols and freshman Olivia Trautman. The Sooners posted a huge total score of 198.825 to dominate the competition, while Georgia struggled a bit in its final rotation. Georgia overcame a fall but had a few uncharacteristic wobbles that led to their final rotation score on balance beam to be a little lower than usual with a 48.825, finishing with a total of 195.300. Both teams are clearly ones to watch for the rest of the season and will likely be among the contenders for the national title later in the year.
