Moon Tumpa began gymnastics at the age of 4 as a pre-team gymnast at The Los Angeles School of Gymnastics. Moon got involved in gymnastics because of her love of the bars at the playground at pre-school. Moon immediately fell in love with the sport, and her coaches Hamest and Boyco. By the time Moon was 5 and a half, she made the team at All Olympia Gymnastics Center and began her competition journey training under Galina Marinova and Arthur Akopyan.
Moon began competing Level 3 at LASG and then competed Level 3 again, after the compulsory Levels were modified, at AOGC. In 2014, Moon earned her first gold medal on Bars at the 2014 USAG So Cal 3rd Prelim. She went on to bring home silver on Floor at the North Sectional, and 2 Bronze medals on Vault and Floor at the 2014 SoCal North State Championships with her best AA score of 37.500. Moon earned her highest score that season at the Gymnastics Legends International with a 9.775 on vault.
Moon competed level 4 in 2015 and earned second place on vault at the Gymnastics Legends meet, she when on to place second again on vault at the AOGC spring Invite. Moon advanced her skills during the season and earned 2 bronze medals at the 2016 Gymnastics Legends and placed second all around.
After the 2015 Moon kicked off her level 5 season with a silver medal on vault and went on to a gold medal on beam at the 3rd Prelim. At the SoCal North State Meet Moon brought home a silver medal for bars, with her highest bar score yet of 9.650
In 2017, Moon entered her optional career with another amazing bar score of 9.650 and a gold medal at the Gymnastics Legends International. She also brought home a bronze medal on beam at this same meet. The very next meet, the Long Beach Open, Moon took first place on bars, second place on floor and 3rd place All Around. At the Chinese New Year Celebration, Moon placed first on bars, first place on beam and also took first place all around with a 37.900. Moon closed her level 6 season with a silver medal on bars and a bronze medal for All-Around at the SoCal State Championship.
Moon advanced to level 7 and opened the season earning first place on bars, and first place All Around with her highest score of 38.075 at the Gliders Invitational. She went on to compete the Lights, Camera, Action! meet and medaled in all 4 events, earning third place on vault, second place on bars, first place on beam and floor and first place All Around with a 38.625. Moon earned first-place on bars with a 9.700 at the Long Beach Open and first place on beam. Moon qualified for the Region 1 Championships and earned first place on bars.
In late 2018, Moon’s gym, AOGC, closed and she moved to Gymnastics Olympica, USA to prepare her for her fast approaching level 8 season. Moon competed at the New Orleans Jazz Invitational and brought home 3 gold medals on vault, bars, and All Around. She then competed at the Gliders International and earned a second place on vault, first place on bars and brought home the gold medal for All Around. Moon ended her level 8 season as strong as she began it, and at the SoCal State Championship, she earned first place vault, first place bars, first place floor and second place All-Around.
With hopes of continued success in level 9, she entered the 2020 season leading with first place on floor at the L.A. Classic Invitational. At the 2020 Gliders international, Moon placed first on vault and third on floor. Moon earned a silver medal for bars at the Excaliber Cup and at the Hollywood Open Moon took first place on vault, and third for All Around. Unfortunately, Moon was not able to compete again in 2020 due the season being cancelled in Southern California due to COVID-19.
Moon began her 2021 season at the Valley of the Sun Challenge. Here, Moon earned a bronze medal on vault. Moon competed one more meet during the 2021 season at the Region 1 Championships where she finished sixth on vault.
Moon currently trains 25 hours per week under Coach Galina Marinova at AOGC. A fun fact about Moon is that due to her fun-spirit, positive attitude and athleticism, she was one of two contestants selected from over 13,000 candidates, to compete on NBC’s American Ninja Warrior Jr. Season 2 in 2020. Moon’s goal is to become Sr. Elite, represent Jamaica at worlds and the Olympics 2024 and earn a scholarship to a Division 1 school for gymnastics.
