Maddy Thomson got her start in gymnastics at the age of five in a recreational class. At the age of nine, Maddy began competing level 3 with Elite Gymnastics Academy of San Diego. At her first meet, the First South Section Prelim, Maddy won the vault title and placed second on bars and in the all around. Maddy continued to have a great first season of competitive gymnastics, and at the 2015 SoCal South State Championships, she finished fourth on beam.
As a level 4 in 2016, Maddy began her season at the Back To School 1st Prelim where she won the vault title and placed second on bars. In November at the SoCal South State Championships, Maddy finished second on vault and in the all around. In her last year of compulsories in 2017 as a level 5, Maddy finished third on vault at the SoCal South State Championships.
Maddy’s optional career began in January 2018 at the Palm Springs Cup. As a level 7, Maddy won the all around title in addition to taking home a silver medal on bars, and bronze medals on beam and floor. Maddy had a great first optional season and at the SoCal State Championships, she finished third on vault and qualified to the Region 1 Championships. Maddy had her best meet of the season at regionals and came away with a silver medal on vault and bronze in the all around.
Maddy began her 2019 level 8 season at the San Francisco Classic where she took fourth on vault and eighth all around. Two months later at the SoCal State Championships, Maddy took fifth on floor and qualified to the Region 1 Championships.
Currently, Maddy trains 16 hours per week under coaches Greg McCalester, Josh Hodgson, Sam Bassett, and Carrie Pohlman at Elite Gymnastics Academy. Right now, Maddy is working on perfecting her stalder on bars, and her long term goal for gymnastics is to set a strong foundation for being healthy and fit for life.
