Biography
Isabela Hwang got her start in gymnastics at the age of five as she loved climbing on the jungle gym and her family thought it would be a great idea to put her in gymnastics. Isabela began competing in the winter of 2017 as a level 4. At her first meet, the Winter Sun Invitational, Isabela came in second on beam. Isabela continued to compete level 4 through the fall season and went on to win the beam title and finish third all around at the Arizona State Championships.
Competing level 5 in 2018, Isabela began her season at the Winter Sun Invitational where she won the vault, bars, beam, and all around titles. In November at the Arizona State Championships, Isabela won the vault, floor, and all around titles.
Isabela began her optional career in January 2019 as a level 7 at the Winter Sun Invitational where she won the vault title. Two months later, Isabela competed at the Arizona State Championships and came home with gold medals on bars and in the all around as well as a silver medal on floor. From state, Isabela qualified to the Region 1 Championships where she concluded her season with a fifth place finish on bars.
As a level 8 in 2020, Isabela began her season at the Winter Sun Invitational and finished first on bars as well as third on vault, floor, and in the all around. At her next meet, the Fiesta Bowl Invitational, Isabela won the all around title. Isabela was able to compete three more meets before the season was unfortunately canceled due to COVID-19.
Competing level 9 in 2021, Isabela began her season at the Flames Invitational where she won the beam title and came in third all around. Throughout the remainder of the regular season, Isabela finished in the top 3 in the all around. In March at the Arizona State Championships, Isabela won the vault title and came in third on beam.
Currently, Isabela trains 20 hours per week under coaches Lisa Spini, Bob Peterson, Shiloh, Kari, and Z at Desert Lights Gymnastics. Isabela's goal for the 2021 season is to score a 38.00 in the all around. In the future, Isabela hopes to compete for an NCAA Divison 1 gymnastics program.
