Iowa State came down to Athens to face off against Georgia for the Gymdogs’ second meet of the weekend, with both teams looking for a big score to help move them up the rankings. Georgia started off extremely strong on vault scoring 49.3, with a 9.900 from freshman Rachael Lukacs on her huge Yurchenko full and a 9.925 from senior Sydney Snead leading the way. Iowa State also started off strong on bars, scoring a 48.95 boosted by the strength of Meaghan Sievers’ 9.900.
In rotation two, Georgia kept up the momentum on the uneven bars. The Bulldogs have the potential to be a great bars team, but having a fall or two has kept them out of breaking a big number so far. Georgia had a fall this competition as well, but was able to drop the routine and score a 49.2 because of a 9.900 from junior Rachel Dickson and a 9.925 from anchor Marissa Oakley. Iowa State fell off the pace a little on vault but still put up a strong rotation, going six for six for a rotation score of 48.9.
Georgia held a commanding lead at the halfway point of the meet, and continued to build with their performance on beam. A pair of 9.875s from Dickson and junior Sabrina Vega helped Georgia overcome a few minor mistakes to still total a 49.175 on their third event. Iowa State’s best performance of the night came on floor in this rotation, where a 9.875 from Sievers led the way for a 49.075 rotation score.
Georgia closed out their night on floor with their best rotation, going 49.325 on floor with the final four gymnasts scoring 9.875 or better. A 9.875 for Dickson, 9.900 for Snead, and 9.925s for Lukacs and Vega, helped the Gymdogs overcome mistakes from the first two gymnasts to hit the 197 mark and win the competition with a score of 197.0. After an equipment malfunction that led to the balance beam having to be replaced during warmups, Iowa State just missed out on hitting the 196 mark with their performance in the final rotation. Their rotation total of 48.975 gave them an ending mark of 195.9, a score they will still be very happy with for a season-high for the Cyclones as well.Tags: Georgia, Georgia Bulldogs, Iowa State, Iowa State Cyclones, Marissa Oakley, Meaghan Sievers, NCAA Gymnastics, Rachael Lukacs, Rachel Dickson, Sabrina Vega, Sydney Snead
