Ava San Jose was born on February 8, 2007, to Renalyn and Delfin San Jose. Ava got her start in gymnastics at the age of three and began competing at the age of six as a level 3 with Paramount Elite Gymnastics in October 2013. Ava finished the season at the SoCal North State Championships where she placed sixth on vault. Ava competed a second year of level 3 during the 2014 season and had a great year. At the SoCal North State Championships, Ava finished first on vault and floor, and took home silver medals on beam and in the all around. Ava competed level 4 during the 2015 season and went on to win the bars and beam title as well as second on vault and in the all around at the SoCal North State Championships. The same year, Ava made the TOPs National B Team and was invited to Developmental Camp.
Ava’s optional career began in 2016. Ava competed level 6 the first three meets of the season, then went on to compete level 7 for the rest of the season. As a level 7 at the SoCal State Championships, Ava finished sixth on bars and qualified to the Region 1 Championships. Ava had a great meet at regionals and placed second on vault and bars. During the 2017 season, Ava competed level 8 as well as trained for Hopes and competed in Hopes qualifiers. At her first level 8 meet, the OC Classic, Ava placed fourth on beam and fifth all around. In early February, Ava competed at the Brestyan’s Las Vegas National Elite Qualifier where she earned her Hopes 10-11 compulsory score. A month later, Ava competed at the KPAC Cup National Elite Qualifier where she placed second on bars and beam. A week after the KPAC Cup Qualifier, Ava competed at the SoCal State Championships and had a great meet, winning the beam title with a 9.750 and placing fourth all around. Due to her great competition, Ava was selected to represent Team SoCal at the Region 1 Championships during the State Team session. At regionals, Ava competed against the top level 8s across four states and placed third on bars and fifth on beam.
During the Summer of 2017, Ava continued to work upgrades for her level 9 season as well as prepare for Hopes. Ava began her 2018 level 9 season at the California Grand Invitational where she placed fifth on vault. In late January, Ava competed at the Fiesta Bowl National Elite Qualifier where she earned her Hopes compulsory score. Six weeks later, Ava earned her Hopes optional score at the KPAC Cup National Elite Qualifier, qualifying for Hopes 10-11 and to the Hopes Classic. After qualifying, Ava finished up her level 9 season. At the SoCal State Championships, Ava finished fifth on bars and qualified to the Region 1 Championships where she had a great meet, winning the beam title and qualifying to the Western Championships. At Westerns, Ava won the beam title with a 9.725. At the beginning of July, Ava competed at the Hopes Classic. Here, Ava had a fantastic competition and went on to win the all around title as well as a silver medal on beam. Ava advanced to the Hopes Championships three weeks later where she won the floor title.
Currently, Ava trains 30 hours per week under coaches Sarah Korngold and Liang Zhao at Paramount Elite Gymnastics in California. In the future, Ava’s goal is to qualify elite and earn a college scholarship for gymnastics.
