All Olympia Gymnastics Center (AOGC), known its gymnasts: 2012 Olympic Gold & Silver Medalist McKayla Maroney, as well as World Medalist Mattie Larson, national team member Samantha Shapiro, and for a short period of time, Mohini Bhardwaj, will be closing its doors.
Last night, an email was sent out to staff and families of the Los Angeles based gym stating that AOGC will no longer be in business. While there does not seem to be a direct reason as to why the gym is closing, the message sent out provides some insight.
Below is the email sent to AOGC staff and families.
Dear gymnasts, parents and coaching staff,
It is with great sorrow to inform you that we have made the extremely difficult decision to close our AOGC gym at the Hawthorne location. It is the hardest and the most painful conclusion that we have to make in our life.
As you know, it has been a difficult few years for the gymnastics world. The rumors and accusations in the gymnastics area create an environment that is unhealthy for our kids and staff, especially for us. The negativity surrounding the sport that we so dearly love has impacted us so much that we no longer feel that we can do our jobs properly.
After dedicating our life to your children, providing opportunities for college scholarships and training mental/physical strength for life challenges including protecting and loving our girls for over 25 years, our sacrifice has been met with un-appreciation and betrayal. During the last several years of training gymnasts, we gained over 20 college scholarships for our gymnasts. We contributed to the highly successful USA Gymnastics in the last 4 Olympic Games and had 1 gymnast competed at the Olympics trial. We won 1 Olympic medal in Athens and 2 Olympic medals in England. We participated and won 5 World championships medals. We also won over 20 International medals from Pan American Games to Pacific Rim and World cups. We have garnered so many more successes from State, Regional, and National champions.
This is truly a heart breaking decision and we will miss all of you dearly. The smiles and laughter that have filled this gym will continuously fill our hearts. This gym is our home away from home. We built this gym based on the family value and teamwork. We planned, created, and put our love and resources to built the most professional gym for your children.
We would like to thank those of you who have shown us support during this difficult time. We believe that we are two of the greatest coaches in gymnastics. However, at this time, Artur and I would like to take a step back to focus on our health and reduce the poor quality effect on our families. As such, we feel regret that our girls will be trained elsewhere and by other coaches. We hope that you do your research and find the best trainers you can for your children. Gymnastics is filled with over promises and under deliveries.
Thank you for all the wonderful memories and for being part of our family and our live. We will never forget this chapter of our life.
With much love and great sorrow!
Artur and Galina
McKayla Maroney’s interview with GymCastic in February 2016 brought attention to AOGC and coaches Artur Akopyan and Galina Marinova. In her interview, Maroney describes the harsh training environment. Whether the Calabassas location of AOGC will stay open is uncertain.
