The staff at Chalk Warrior are excited to announce our third annual Gymnast of the Year Award! Our goal is to select the best female Junior Olympic (JO), Xcel, Hopes, and Elite gymnasts in the United States based on their performances during the 2018-2019 season. While gymnastics is a subjective sport, we at Chalk Warrior want to be completely transparent in our selection process. Below is the selection criteria that will be used to select the Top 50 JO, Top 25 Xcel, 12 Hopes, and 10 elite Nominees for the 2019 Chalk Warrior Gymnast of the Year Award.

Number of Nominees

87 total gymnasts will be nominated for the 2019 Chalk Warrior Gymnast of the Year Award. These 90 nominees will be made up of 50 JO, 25 Xcel, 12 Hopes gymnasts, and 10 elite gymnasts.

Scoring Criteria

JO

JO Nominees levels 6-8 must have an average all around score of at least 38.00 where all all around scores are taken into account. However, if for some reason the gymnast does not compete all four events at one or more meets, these incomplete all around scores will not be factored into the average.

Level 9 JO must have an average of at least 37.000 where all all around scores are taken into account. Level 10 JO Nominees must have an average of at least 37.500 where all around scores are taken into account. However, if for some reason the gymnast does not compete all four events at one or more meets, these incomplete all around scores will not be factored into the average. In addition, all level 9 and 10 nominees must have scored a 38.00 in the all around at least once during the 2018-2019 season.

Xcel

Xcel Gold and Xcel Platinum nominees must have an average all around score of at least 37.500 where all all around scores are taken into account. However, if for some reason the gymnast does not compete all four events at one or more meets, these incomplete all around scores will not be factored into the average. Xcel Diamond Nominees must have an average all around score of 37.000 where all all around scores are taken into account. In addition, all Xcel nominees must have scored a 38.00 in the all around at least once during the 2018-2019 season.

Hopes & Elite

There are no scoring criteria for Hopes or Elite Nominees.

Achievement Criteria

JO

JO nominees levels 6-8 must have qualified and competed at their regional championships. However, in 2019, regions 2 and 7 did not host regionals for both levels 6 and 7, and regions 3, 5, and 6 did not host regionals for level 6. Therefore, for level 6 gymnasts in regions 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7, only a score at their respective state championships will be required. For level 7 gymnasts in regions 2 and 7, only a score at their respective state championships will be required. For gymnasts that can qualify to and compete in a Regional Championship, this qualification can only be overridden if the gymnast clearly qualified to her Regional Championship and finished in the Top 3 in the all around at her state championship, but did not compete at her Regional Championship for any reason.

All regions 1-8 host Regional Championships for level 8. Therefore, all level 8 nominees must have qualified and competed at their Regional Championship. This qualification can only be overridden if the gymnast clearly qualified to her Regional Championship and finished in the Top 3 in the all around at her state championship, but did not compete at her Regional Championship for any reason.

JO nominees levels 9 and 10 must have at least qualified to Eastern or Western Championships for level 9 and the JO National Championships for level 10. A level 9 or 10 gymnast may also be nominated if she finished in the top 3 in the all around at her Regional Championships and qualified to Eastern or Western Championships or JO National Championships, but did not compete at these championships.

In addition, all JO Nominees levels 6-9 must be competing their first season in their respective level. However, if a gymnast is repeating a level due to her 2017-2018 season ending short (i.e. injury, illness, etc.) which would be prior to her State Championships, she is eligible to be nominated for the 2019 JO Gymnast of the Year Award.

Xcel

All Xcel nominees Gold, Platinum and Diamond must qualify and compete at their respective Regional Championships. However, Region 2 does not host an Xcel Regional Championship, so Xcel gymnasts in Region 2 will only be required to compete at their respective State Championships in order to be nominated.

Hopes

All Hopes nominees must have qualified and competed at the Hopes Championships.

Elite

All elite nominees, both junior and senior, must have earned a spot on the 2019-2020 U.S. National Team.
